Unit 9
For centuries nations and people had relied upon on global networks of exchange. By the 20th century globalization had emerged on a larger scale. This new level of interconnection and interdependence would bring about the movement of people and goods on scale never seen before in human history. Globalization brought with it new technology, economic prosperity, and calls for environmental and political reform around the world. New international organizations, such as the United Nations, EU, NAFTA, ASEAN, APEC, and many more, have emerged to promote international peace and economic development. Globalization has also been marked by a sharp resistance as some see the interdependence as challenge to state sovereignty and the interconnections as eroding traditional cultural beliefs. By the end of the century new threats emerged to challenge globalization and the global balance of power moving into the 21st century.
