With the failure of the Revolutions of 1830 and 1848 Europe was poised for a new round of nationalistic fervor to spread in the second half of the 19th century. Nationalist movements ignited in Germany and Italy. A dual monarchy was created in Austria-Hungary in order to stabilize the region. With the growth of the Industrial Revolution the powers of Europe began to establish tighter control of colonies around the globe. European imperialism came with racial undertones. The scientific discoveries of Charles Darwin were applied to society. Social Darwinism became the justification for the subjugation of many groups across the globe. The actions taken by the European powers during the age of imperialism would ultimately lead to the first major global conflict of the 20th century.
